15 Important Qualities of an Outstanding Preschool Teacher

  • A good preschool teacher should have the patience of a saint…
  • Good and Engaging Personality. A great teacher is kind, gentle and has a good personality…
  • Knowledgeable and Up-to-date….
  • Good Listener and Communicator…

I love being a preschool teacher. I love seeing little faces light up with a smile when I open the door to the classroom every morning… I love listening to a room full of kids laugh just because they like how it feels. I love the “difficult” children who say no to everything and test me to see if I mean what I say. I love it when my students are so excited about a topic that they ask a million questions and don’t want to leave the rug for our next activity. I love creating a sense of community by encouraging the parents and caregivers to linger a bit at drop off and pick up and chat about what’s going on in our room and in their lives. And what I love most about being a preschool teacher is that I see the difference I make in my student’s lives, every single day.

FUN! REWARDING! EXCITING! Being a preschool teacher in my opinion is the best because you get to introduce children to a lot of first time discoveries.

Have you ever seen the awe and excitement of a child when they see a butterfly emerge from a cocoon? I have. Have you ever heard young children laughing because you introduced them to the wonderful world of science, blowing their minds, by making a reaction with vinegar and baking soda? I have. Have you ever had a preschooler bring you a honey bee in an insect cage and just sit, look, study and ask you questions? I have. Have you ever had a child scream in excitement when he mixed yellow and blue paint together and green magically appeared? I have. Have you ever had a child come and hug you because they were so happy to have finally mastered the art of scissor cutting? I have.

We adults forget how wonderfully exciting first time experiences can be. We forget how magical the early years of childhood are. Everyday, there is something new to discover and experience! Being a preschool teacher allows you to relive first time experiences on a daily basis. If you are a preschool teacher never forget this! Get dirty and explore the world with your children. It is the job of a preschool teacher to set a good foundation for higher learning. What a privilege it is to not only watch a preschooler experience things for the first time but to also be able to relive these first time experiences everyday, right along with them.
